special bulletin: stone completes table, blogosphere stunned

I DID IT!!! ok...so maybe i haven't been running (...it's been in the single digits outside!), and last night's final load of laundry has been sitting in the dryer for 18 hours (...we had to watch football with friends!), but i HAVE followed one new year's resolution so far: i finally completed the boring console table that i began making over back in october. and i am thrilled with the results!

from this:

to this:

TA-DA!!!

after a light sanding, i gave the whole thing a coat of light blue paint, then i hand painted the design in white (inspired by this wisteria chest). one meeeeellion years later, i finally got around to coating it in two different types of glaze. i'm really pleased with the way the raised texture of the hand painting caught the glaze, giving the design lots of depth and the whole piece an antique vibe - exactly what i wanted.

not one to avoid a chance to be ridiculously perfectionist, i even lined the drawers with a contrasting harlequin-patterned paper (and mod podge, so it's quasi-durable):

festive, no? now, the million dollar question is....

original knobs that i painted bronze, for a rustic touch?

or faceted glass knobs, for a splash of antique glam?

thoughts?

  1. Love it! And I don' know why, but I especially love the drawer lining. I have a similar table I need to transform. Mine will be simpler, but I will most definitely line the drawers.

  5. WOW! i cannot believe you painted it by hand! it is absolutely amazing! and, you might be a little crazy, but i bet you smile every time you walk by it! and, i vote for the glass knobs because all the attention stays on the design and they don't distract from your beautiful painting.

  6. nothing short of perfect, mrs. stone! love both knobs...though i do agree with the commenters who say that the glass knobs allow more attention to go to your excellent brushwork. you have the perfect touch. well done!

  8. I weighing in in favor of the glass knobs too. I recently wanted to put some on a piece I refinished, but hubby hates is, so I had to stick to metal.

  11. It looks like I am outnumbered but I prefer the darker knobs...I think it sort of anchors the piece and gives it some interesting contrast. Both are lovely, and the details look great! Nice work!

  18. Bronze-y knobs. I like the way it ties the other brown elements on top and beneath the table together.

  22. Hi Lauren! I love your table. I'm so impressed. Question - how did you modgepoge (sp!) the paper to the drawers? I've been thinking about doing something similar to the tops of these tables I'm spray painting. Did you do anything special? I'm in search of the perfect scrapbook paper right now. Who knew giraffe print scrapbook paper was hard to come by?
