upholstress

you have seen this picture approximately 65 times already. but there is a good reason i posted it. that reason is that it is the only picture i have of that chair on my computer, and i'm too lazy to take another one. at present, that chair is ripped apart with sharpie marks all over it. because guesstheheckwhat? i am two weeks deep into a 5 week upholstery class at a local community college! and by local i mean 45 minutes away in another state. which was awesome when it monsooned all night last thursday and i sustained a heart attack for the entire commute. but you know, bravery and personal growth and all, so whatev.

my initial desire was to recover it in a natural linen and add a short, pleated skirt, reminiscent of this slipcover:

and then i remembered the man and mutts i live with and how much that chair gets sat upon and walked beside and whacked with tail. scratch that plan. at some point in the future, i may still make a slipcover like this, but for the permaupholstery, it's on to plan b: a light blue chenilley-type fabric + nailhead trim. thusly:

except with arms. and two rows of nailheads around the bottom. because that's how the chair is made. plan b also comes with the bonus that i'll need to buy new drapes, because the current ones are that color, and that'll just be too much blue. twist my arm.

i have never been more excited to drive a million miles in the dark by myself to spend two hours on the floor pulling out nine thousand million staples until my thumb falls off while listening to old country folk talk about their cattle farms and antique stores in my life. i can't wait to share the finished product! let's not get ahead of ourselves though: hopefully i can actually DO this thang....

because that chair has a twin sister at home.

You're living my dream! I'd love to take an upholstery class at the local tech school. I just never get around to it.

Where are you taking your class? I'm in Memphis too and would love to check that out sometime.

I know the last comment I see was from Dec last year! But I am looking for an upholstery class for my daughter-in-law as a gift. I am also giving her a cool chair "project". Any suggestions?
